This paper analyzes the exceptional relationship between historical events and the sacramental genre, based on an «auto» that was considered lost during many years. This «auto» is El socorro de Cádiz by Juan Pérez de Montalbán, in which the playwright allegorizes the defense of Cádiz against the English in 1625.

The Hays Office and the Two Updated Film Versions of Madeleine Smith’s Case: Letty Lynton (1932) and Dishonored Lady (1947)

2016

The celebrated case of Madeleine Smith, the Glasgow poisoner, who was tried for murder (and absolved) in 1857, has resulted in many novels, plays, films and television series. Hollywood, during its classical period, made two updated versions of the incident: Letty Lynton (Clarence Brown, 1932) and Dishonored Lady (Robert Stevenson, 1947). Even though the two films are separated by more than a decade, the self-censorship introduced by the studios themselves – MPPDA, commonly known as the Hays Office – exercised so much control over the two pictures that they can hardly be taken as equivalent. This article proposes a comparative analysis of the two films and how censorship acted as a constrai…

The Arrival of Steppe and Iranian Related Ancestry in the Islands of the Western Mediterranean

2019

A series of studies have documented how Steppe pastoralist-related ancestry reached central Europe by at least 2500 BCE, while Iranian farmer-related ancestry was present in Aegean Europe by at least 1900 BCE. However, the spread of these ancestries into the western Mediterranean where they have contributed to many populations living today remains poorly understood. We generated genome-wide ancient DNA from the Balearic Islands, Sicily, and Sardinia, increasing the number of individuals with reported data from these islands from 3 to 52. We obtained data from the oldest skeleton excavated from the Balearic islands (dating to ∼2400 BCE), and show that this individual had substantial Steppe p…

Recenti scavi e ricerche a Terravecchia di Cuti

2020

The aim of this paper is to illustrate the preliminary results of research (intrasite survey and excavation) carried out from 2013 to 2017 in the fortified settlement of Terravecchia di Cuti. The intrasite survey allowed to select the excavation area. Some walls, part of two distinct buildings, have been identified: the most interesting structure is a large room, perhaps a courtyard, around which there are at least three rooms. Remains of pithoi are in the rooms, and two on the courtyard floor. Remains of other walls have also been identified, different in orientation and composition compared to the structures described; these walls are older than the buildings 1 and 2. Finally, it seems th…
